While visiting family in Guatemala, I came across this graffiti in the town of Santa Cruz, Atitlan. I felt proud of this small town for raising awareness through public art, as the environmental challenges at the Lake Atitlan are many. For those that don’t speak Spanish the humor may not be appreciated but the message is still important: We don’t want half an environment, we want it whole.
The same can be said for the body environment. True health is attained when all aspects of a person, physical, mental and spiritual, are maintained, protected and rehabilitated. Some practitioners believe that all physical disease originates in the spirit. I believe that it’s a two-way street. While not all physical ailments start because of a spiritual or emotional imbalance, the mind and spirit are always affected during a physical illness. Taking care of one’s emotional and spiritual environment can be challenging if not already in the habit, but it does not need to be complicated. Here are some simple ways to pay attention to your spiritual and emotional health:
- Take a moment of silence every day. It’s easiest to develop the habit if always done at the same time
- Smile to yourself when you experience something you like; even if no one is watching
- When you feel upset or depressed, concentrate on where in your body you feel the emotion
