As young children, we feel as if time does not go fast enough. As adults, we look back and wonder how it all went too fast. As a parent, I find this “quickening of time” effect especially disconcerting as I watch my kids grow exponentially before my eyes. Now, more than ever, I am inspired to put into practice the lessons from many spiritual teachers as exemplified in The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle and soak up every minute of my daughter’s childhoods:
“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”
I am touched by the efforts of artist Franz Hofmeester who filmed the miracle of his daughter’s transition from babyhood to adulthood. Parents around the world: may we remember our children’s past fondly, look forward to their future with an open heart and live fully in appreciation and acceptance of who they are today.
